Celmanax®
Western U.S. Beef Facility
A study was conducted March through June, 2005, at a facility in the western U.S. to evaluate the effects of two commercially available feed supplements containing MOS. Two sets, 40 each, of baby bull calves were maintained at the same conditions and same diets with the exception of MOS supplementation. One set was provided Celmanax® FG (Vi-COR®) at 8 grams/ day, while the other set was provided Bio-MOS (Alltech) at 4 grams/ day. Both products were mixed and suspended in a calf milk replacement formula.
The Celmanax bull calf group showed an average weight gain of 112 lbs., while the Bio-MOS
calf group showed a 93 pound gain; a 19 pound higher average weight gain for Celmanax fed
calves.
A 50% reduction in morbidity or mortality was observed in the Celmanax group.
Discussion: Calves fed Celmanax had higher weight while on MOS supplementation and
continued to gain faster and maintain healthy status after Celmanax was removed from the diet.
Calves fed diets with Celmanax had improved weight gain, reduced morbidity and less mortality.
